Georgia State Senator, Shawn Still, Indictment in the Fulton County Investigation

Shawn Still, a current Georgia state senator and former finance chair for the Georgia Republican Party, has been indicted in the Fulton County grand jury investigation. Still is one of the 19 defendants investigated over the alleged 2020 scheme to overturn presidential election results in Georgia. He participated as one of the 16 fake presidential electors for the state during the election.

Background on Shawn Still

Still currently represents the 48th district of Georgia in the state senate, including parts of Fulton, Gwinnett, and Forsyth counties. A seat previously held by David Shafer, Still’s co-defendant in the Fulton case. His participation in the fake elector scheme occurred before his office tenure in 2023. He also owns a swimming pool construction business and a rafting company.

Reasons for Still’s Indictment

Still and 15 others purported to award Georgia’s electoral college votes to Donald Trump by signing a fake electoral college certificate, despite Joe Biden winning the popular vote in Georgia. The aim was to send two slates of presidential electors – the true slate for Biden and the false slate for Trump – to Congress, intending for Vice President Pence or Congress to declare Trump the winner of the state.

Still allegedly participated in this scheme with co-defendant David Shafer, who led a secret meeting for the 16 fake electors in the Georgia Capitol building in Atlanta. During this meeting, the fake electors signed fraudulent electoral certifications for Trump. Still was the secretary of the meeting and also acted as one of the fake electors.

Still was indicted in Fulton County in August 2023 on 7 charges. In total, 84 fake electors, including those from Georgia and six other states, submitted fake Electoral College certificates to the National Archives, falsely declaring Donald Trump as the winner of the 2020 Presidential election, despite Biden winning their states.

The charges Still is facing include: violating Georgia’s Racketeer and Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (“RICO”) Act, impersonating a public officer, two counts of forgery in the first degree, two counts of making false statements and writing, and a criminal attempt to file false documents.

Despite the indictment, a three-person panel appointed by Governor Brian Kemp has recommended that he will not be temporarily suspended from state office while the case is pending. So, Still continues to hold office.
