Eligible organizations, including local government units, tribal governments, state agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations, can apply for reimbursement grants ranging from $10,000 to $225,000 to carry out urban forestry-related activities that benefit disadvantaged areas in Michigan. The grant program, which is funded by the USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, requires that projects must be completed by Sept. 1, 2026.

Michigan’s DNR Invites Grant Applications for Urban Forestry Program

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has opened the second round of the Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act (UCF IRA) grant program for applications till August 31, according to a recent press release.

A one-hour interactive webinar hosted by DNR staff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, providing applicants with valuable information about the program, requirements, application tips, and a chance to have their queries addressed.

The grant program is open to various organizations – local government units, tribal governments, state agencies, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. These organizations can apply for reimbursement grants ranging from $10,000 to $225,000 for executing urban forestry-related initiatives that directly benefit Michigan’s disadvantaged areas.

Projects demonstrating public involvement in planning, establishing, and managing urban forests are eligible. They should provide benefits addressing community priorities such as local environmental justice, equity issues, climate change, tree health, and resilience.

Eligible activities include data collection, plan development, tree planting, maintenance, engagement and outreach, training, workforce development, food forests, wood utilization, and more. Projects benefitting disadvantaged areas do not require a match.

Projects need to be completed by September 1, 2026. For more details on the DNR UCF IRA grant program, download the grant handbook and application, visit Michigan.gov/UCF.

The USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 fund this program.
