Also, Murray has secured nearly $500 million in CDS for WA projects and over $5 billion in programmatic funding for Washington state, highlighting a continued commitment to rural healthcare and an opposition to Trump’s Medicaid cuts.

Senator Patty Murray Advocates for Rural Healthcare, Secures $2.26 Million for Kittitas Valley Healthcare

US Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, recently visited Kittitas Valley Healthcare and led a roundtable discussion with local healthcare leaders. During the visit, she discussed the $2.26 million she was able to secure in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) to support improvements in patient care and emphasized the need for investment in rural healthcare.

During the roundtable discussion, they addressed the state of rural healthcare and the challenges facing healthcare providers and patients in Central Washington. This comes in the wake of significant healthcare cuts implemented through Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, along with the expiration of the ACA tax credits.

Notable attendees included Jason Adler, CEO of Kittitas Valley Healthcare; Dr. Andrew Thomas, Chief Medical Officer at Kittitas Valley Healthcare; DeDe Feddema, Director of Emergency Services and a nurse at Kittitas Valley Healthcare; Mitchell Rhodes, Executive Director of Kittitas County Health Network; and Kristl Densley, Director of Community Relations at Kittitas Valley Healthcare.

Senator Murray expressed her concern for the situation, stating, “Last year, we saw Republicans pass the single largest cut to health care in our nation’s history—with rural hospitals taking the biggest hit”. She further noted that the funding she managed to secure for Kittitas Valley Healthcare is significantly smaller compared to the extensive Medicaid cuts passed by Trump and the Republicans’ refusal to extend the ACA tax credits.

She also stressed that the conversation underscored the dire direction rural hospitals are headed towards and emphasized on the need for Congress to repeal Trump’s Medicaid cuts and concentrate on making health care affordable.

Kittitas Valley Healthcare serves thousands of patients annually in rural communities in Central Washington, providing invaluable support. The funding secured by Senator Murray would enable the healthcare provider to renovate and expand clinical space for orthopedic and surgical services, thereby modernizing care for patients.

On top of the aforementioned funding, Senator Murray secured nearly $500 million in CDS for WA projects through the Fiscal Year 2026 funding bills she authored and passed. She also contributed towards allocating over $5 billion in programmatic funding for Washington state.

Despite these significant achievements, the healthcare leaders voiced out about the existing challenges they face in providing quality healthcare to rural communities. They highlighted the issues regarding funding, accessibility, and the stress on healthcare workers which have been exacerbated due to the recent healthcare cuts.

The group collectively emphasized the importance of collaboration, sufficient funding, and federal policies that encourage young clinicians to opt for rural practice in order to ensure equal access to healthcare for patients living in rural regions.
