Monetizing Athlete’s Brands in College Sports
In the wake of NCAA’s reform of its name-image-likeness rules three years ago, college athletes have been able to monetize their brands, leading to significant financial gains. Female athletes have particularly benefited, with personalities like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese bringing their monetized personal brands to the WNBA while others like Louisiana State University gymnast Livvy Dunne are making waves in sports without a clear professional pathway.
The Rise of Livvy Dune as an NIL Star
At 22, Livvy Dunne is in her fifth year on LSU’s gymnastics team and has become an NIL sensation. Boasting 4.5 million Instagram followers and 8 million TikTok followers, Dunne has signed brand deals with activewear brand Vuori, American Eagle, and Nautica. On3’s list of NIL athletes by valuation places her second, with a valuation of $4 million, only trailing football star Shedeur Sanders. She’s also the highest-ranked female athlete on the list, far outperforming the next female earner, LSU basketball star Flau’jae Johnson, by $2.5 million.
Brand Deals and Future Ambitions
In May, Dunne inked a multi-million-dollar NIL partnership with Passes, a competitor to OnlyFans that monetizes creators’ content. Also, she recently signed her first brand deal offering an equity stake, partnering with influencer Jake Paul’s personal care brand W. Dunne hopes to leverage her discipline as a student-athlete to continue her social media career post-college and is also keen on launching her own brand.
Empowering Other Female Athletes
Dunne has also started a fund at LSU to help fellow female athletes learn how to monetize their brands and talents. She believes that NIL presents significant opportunities for female athletes, given the scarcity of professional leagues for women’s sports after college.
