Comparing AI Usage: ChatGPT by OpenAI vs Claude by Anthropic

Overview of The Duel Between AI Giants

Industry rivals, Anthropic and OpenAI, have recently published competing studies that highlight the usage patterns of their flagship products, ChatGPT and Claude. These comprehensive reports offer insights into how users are employing these AI tools in both work and non-work settings.

ChatGPT vs Claude: A Comparison of Uses

While the studies utilized distinct methodologies and datasets, OpenAI’s analysis indicates that consumers predominantly use ChatGPT for personal and exploratory purposes. On the other hand, Anthropic’s data reveals that users mainly employ Claude.ai and Claude API for work-related tasks like programming, research, and education.

Detailed Analysis of ChatGPT Usage

According to OpenAI’s report, the majority of ChatGPT conversations aren’t work-related. Non-work-related interactions accounted for over 70% of all usage, a rise from 53% in June 2024. On the contrary, work-related queries constituted 27% of all messages, marking a decrease from 47% a year prior. This suggests a shift in ChatGPT’s role from an enterprise tool to a general consumer product.

The study further revealed the top three conversation categories with ChatGPT: practical guidance, writing, and information-seeking. These categories collectively contribute to nearly 78% of all interactions. The study also notes that when ChatGPT was used for work, users frequently utilized it in an advisory or research assistant role rather than for task execution. Writing tasks were the most common work use, representing 42% of work-related messages.

Deep Dive into Claude Usage Patterns

Research from Anthropic shows a stark contrast, with Claude being heavily utilized for work-related productivity. Mathematical tasks and coding are the prevalent uses of Claude.ai globally. Furthermore, usage in education and scientific research has significantly increased since December 2024. Businesses, especially those using Claude through the API, primarily use the tool for automation-heavy work.

Conclusions Drawn from Dueling Studies

The contrasting studies suggest that users prefer specific models or products for different task types. ChatGPT is emerging as a personal or exploratory tool, used for writing, information-seeking, and casual interaction. In contrast, Claude is primarily a work-focused productivity tool, heavily used for coding, research, and business automation. This suggests that different AI companies could be creating complementary niches instead of competing directly.
