Volunteers Assemble Comfort Cases for Michigan’s Foster Children

In Grand Rapids, 40 volunteers have joined forces to help foster children feel comforted during their first night with new families. The initiative is led by Comfort Cases, a non-profit organization, and HAP CareSource, a renowned non-profit.

The volunteers organized a packing party, stuffing 500 backpacks with care items. “Each bag contains personal hygiene items, a new pair of pajamas, a book, a stuffed animal, a blanket, and an activity,” explained Rob Scheer, Comfort Cases founder.

Scheer, a former foster child, was inspired to create Comfort Cases after his own experience of carrying his belongings in a trash bag. He believes it’s the society’s responsibility to ensure a brighter future for foster children.

Of the 500 Comfort Cases assembled, Samaritas of West Michigan, a local charity, is anticipated to receive 250 for distribution to local foster children.

Hope James, a Program Manager, appreciates the effort, stating that the cases are age and size appropriate, ensuring each child gets exactly what they need. As an example, infant cases include pacifiers, bottles, and correctly sized onesies, while those for older kids contain different items.

James also expressed her joy in seeing the community unite to support families and local foster children. “This is exciting to know that these items will support families and children,” she added.
