Central NC Students Triumph in North Carolina Aviation Art Contest

The North Carolina Aviation Art Contest, an annual event by the NC Department of Transportation Division of Aviation, celebrated several winners from central North Carolina this year. The competition aims to spark young people’s interest in the aviation industry.

This year witnessed a high level of student participation, with 1,646 entrants. After detailed judging and voting, nine students emerged as winners, split across three age divisions.

Junior Category (2014-2017):

  • 1st – Jasmine Lee, Antioch Elementary School, Matthews
  • 2nd – Aaron Chen, Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy, Morrisville
  • 3rd – Minseo Son, Pleasant Grove Elementary School, Cary

Intermediate Category (2010-2013):

  • 1st – Ellis Gibson, North Buncombe Elementary School, Weaverville
  • 2nd – Carolynn Kim, Apex Friendship Elementary School, Apex
  • 3rd – Emma Chen, Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy, Charlotte

Senior Category (2006-2009):

  • 1st – Isabel Chang, Cary Academy, Cary
  • 2nd – Yeji Na, Cary Christian School, Cary
  • 3rd – Emma Shin, Green Hope High School, Cary

The winning artwork is available online. Alternatively, art enthusiasts can experience the top 12 pieces from each age division at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.

The top three students in each age category will proceed to a national contest, with a chance to compete internationally. Since 2017, North Carolina has seen 13 students rank in the top three nationally, with three of these advancing to international victory.
