The American College of Surgeons (ACS) plans to use Epic’s Community Registries Platform to simplify data collection for hospitals. The move is intended to enhance data usage and drive quality improvement more rapidly.
The ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) was introduced two decades ago to boost safety and care quality in hospitals. The fresh collaboration with Epic is a critical part of ACS’s clinical data strategy, meant to integrate artificial intelligence and advanced technologies better to support hospitals and health systems.
The 90,000-member ACS stated that its data collection process for participating hospitals will be streamlined. This would lead to more comprehensive patient records and timely insights for clinical decision-making.
The ACS’s clinical data strategy is a multi-year initiative set to extend to other electronic medical record providers and technology. “Our ACS Surgical Quality Partner hospitals know that good data are integral for sustained improvement efforts. The lesser the burden of data collection and analysis, the higher the impact of our programs,” said Patricia L. Turner, M.D., M.B.A., executive director, and CEO of the ACS.
Within the coming year, ACS will integrate the Community Registries Platform into its technology stack to automate data capture. Registries like ACS NSQIP Pediatric and the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program will be part of this effort.
Phil Lindemann, Vice President of Data and Research at Epic, highlighted the ease the integration would bring for health systems and surgeons to participate and exchange insights.
