TL/DR –
Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs of Arizona may face a difficult reelection campaign in 2026. Analysis suggests Hobbs’s best chance for reelection may come if Republicans nominate a far-right candidate like Rep. Andy Biggs, echoing the dynamics of 2022 when she defeated Kari Lake. Republican Karrin Taylor Robson, who positions herself as a Trump loyalist, may need to moderate her stance to appeal to a broader electorate.
Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs Faces Tough Reelection Campaign
Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs is up against a challenging reelection campaign, unless she is saved by Republican Rep. Andy Biggs. The 2026 gubernatorial race in Arizona is currently a toss-up, and her best chance for reelection may hinge on Republicans nominating a far-right candidate like Biggs, echoing the 2022 dynamics where she defeated Kari Lake.
A report indicates that Governor Hobbs could be in peril as she faces reelection. Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a nonpartisan analysis from the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, rates Arizona’s race as one of just two toss-ups countrywide.
Republican Karrin Taylor Robson, positioning herself as a Trump loyalist, needs to moderate her stance to attract a broader electorate. However, the Club for Growth poll suggests that Biggs would have a better shot at ousting the governor.
Biggs, who has never had to appeal to a statewide electorate, has a history of controversial moves, such as touting unproven cures for COVID-19, decrying masks as a symbol of tyranny, and voting against the CHIPS Act.
Karrin Taylor Robson’s Strategy
Karrin Taylor Robson, a traditional conservative Republican, has so far focused her campaign on Trump’s “complete and total endorsement.” However, this endorsement was given before Biggs entered the race, and Trump has since also endorsed Biggs. This has the potential to tarnish Taylor Robson’s golden ticket.
Taylor Robson, therefore, needs a course correction. She should highlight what she can offer other than unquestioned loyalty to a former president. There’s still time for her to shift her strategy and attract both Trump Republican and independent voters.
However, if Taylor Robson continues on her current path, Hobbs might benefit from the situation. After all, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results isn’t a winning formula.
