Boosting Wisconsin’s Rural Healthcare with Federal Grants

TL/DR –

The Biden Administration is investing $11 million to expand medical residencies in rural communities in the U.S. with 15 medical systems around the country receiving part of this fund; $750,000 is allocated to Wisconsin’s UW-Health’s OB-GYN program. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has also recognized Wisconsin’s efforts in building a rural healthcare workforce and is encouraging the state to expand its Medicaid. However, Medicaid expansion is opposed by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, which advocates for employment and access to private insurance.

Biden Administration Announces $11M Investment in Rural Medical Residencies

The Biden administration is investing $11 million to expand medical residencies in rural communities. This news was announced by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Neera Tanden in Northcentral Wisconsin.

Investments in Rural Health Care

The government officials visited Aspirus Riverview Hospital, which houses Mid-State Technical College’s Health Care Simulation Center. This center provides nursing and paramedical students with hands-on experience with simulated patients. Among the recipients of the $11 million investment, 15 medical systems across the country were highlighted, with $750,000 allocated to Wisconsin’s UW-Health’s OB-GYN program.

Future Opportunities for Rural Health Funding

When questioned about future funding for the northern half of Wisconsin, housing a majority of its rural communities, Secretary Becerra suggested there are more opportunities for funds. He emphasized that collaboration with Congress members could lead to further investments in health facilities in rural areas.

Advocacy for Medicaid Expansion

The secretary and director repeatedly underscored the need for Wisconsin to expand Medicaid, one of 10 states that hasn’t, thus forgoing extra federal dollars. This suggestion was countered by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, which supports private insurance through employment.

Addressing the Rural Health Care Workforce Gap

The Department of Health and Human Services highlighted the efforts taken in Northcentral Wisconsin toward bolstering the rural health care workforce. This comes in response to concerns regarding an aging population and a shortage of medical professionals. Among the proposed solutions is a potential increase in Medicare and Medicaid investments.

HHS’ Initiatives to Improve Rural Health Services

Several significant initiatives have been launched by HHS to enhance health services and accessibility for Americans in rural communities. This includes expanding access to affordable, quality health care through the Affordable Care Act Marketplaces and lowering prescription drug costs through the Inflation Reduction Act. In 2023, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) provided approximately $173 million in grants, including $90 million for rural behavioral health care services and nearly $65 million to boost the rural workforce in areas of need.
