New York, NY – Carolina Hurricanes Pull Off Stunning Third-Period Comeback
Overcoming a 1-0 deficit, the Carolina Hurricanes delivered a remarkable four-goal performance in the final 20 minutes to emerge victorious over the New York Rangers 4-1. This thrilling Monday night game sends the series back to Raleigh for Game 6.
Jordan Staal and Yevgeny Kuznetsov scored 3:06 apart in the third period, driving the Game 5 win in the second-round playoff series. This marks the second consecutive game the Hurricanes have managed to avoid elimination.
“There was no panic, we understood the situation,” stated Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amoiur. “You were one shot away, and that’s the way they approached it.”
The team’s third period also featured goals by Jordan Martinook and Martin Necas, while Frederik Andersen, the Hurricanes’ steadfast goalkeeper, completed 20 saves.
Jacob Trouba for the Rangers scored a short-handed goal, and Igor Shesterkin blocked 24 shots. The Rangers, however, have now lost two straight games after securing a 3-0 series lead.
“We knew we had to have our best period, and we did. We’re fighting for our lives and the boys showed up and it showed,” said Staal.
The Hurricanes triumphed in spite of failing to score during three power plays, maintaining a series total of 1 for 20.
Staal tied the game with a skillful backhanded shot at 3:33, scoring his first goal of the playoffs. Kuznetsov then secured the lead for the Hurricanes, scoring his fourth of the postseason following the rebound of Brady Skjei’s shot.
Martinook increased the lead to 3-1 before the midpoint of the period. The Rangers endeavored a comeback by pulling Shesterkin for an extra player with less than four minutes remaining, but Necas quickly countered with a long shot into the empty net.
“We’re fighting for our lives every game,” Martinook said. “We gave ourselves a chance to play another game and hopefully give ourselves a chance to come back here (for a deciding Game 7).”
The series, led 3-2 by the Rangers, heads back to Raleigh for Game 6 on Thursday night.
“One game at a time,” asserted Rangers forward Chris Kreider. “We’ll just go down there and play better, be more detailed. Find a way to win.”
New York coach Peter Laviolette expressed disappointment with the game’s outcome. “Got some time here before the next game, but clearly we got to do a lot of things better,” he said. “We’ll go back and look at it and we’ll try to correct those issues.”
