Chinese AI DeepSeek Rattles U.S. Stock Market, Outperforms in Healthcare Analysis Test
TL/DR –
The Chinese AI upstart, DeepSeek, has caused some disruption in the U.S. stock market, notably the tech-heavy NASDAQ, due to its comparable capabilities to large American language models but at a lower cost and using less advanced technology. In a head-to-head analysis with ChatGPT on the topic of U.S. healthcare costs, DeepSeek demonstrated a more comprehensive understanding and historical knowledge. Both models identified 10 contributing factors to the high costs but differed on a few points, and DeepSeek was found to be more thorough in its contributions and showed knowledge of recent history, such as the Affordable Care Act.
DeepSeek AI Poses Challenge in US Stock Market
The US stock market, particularly NASDAQ, experienced significant disruptions due to a Chinese AI startup, DeepSeek. The company has managed to replicate the successes of major US-developed language models but with lower-grade technology and at a fraction of the cost, despite US restrictions on advanced microchip sales to China.
The internet-breaking capabilities of DeepSeek’s R1 model led us to conduct a comparative analysis with ChatGPT on a basic question: “Why is healthcare so expensive in the U.S.?”
Head-to-head: DeepSeek vs. ChatGPT
While both engines identified 10 factors contributing to US healthcare costs, they varied in their responses. ChatGPT noted the lack of universal healthcare, while DeepSeek highlighted the high cost of medical education and variations in pricing.
DeepSeek was generally more comprehensive, tackling the issue of chronic disease management by discussing contributing lifestyle factors and the resultant strain on the healthcare industry. Contrastingly, ChatGPT simply listed high prevalence rates of diseases like diabetes and obesity.
DeepSeek demonstrated a grasp of recent history, referencing the Affordable Care Act, whereas ChatGPT merely suggested systemic reform in pricing, regulation, and healthcare delivery.
