December Launch for Medicaid Expansion: Key Details

North Carolina’s Medicaid Expansion to Benefit 600,000 People

From December 1, hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians will receive health insurance coverage. A policy expert stated on WCNC’s Flashpoint that the Medicaid expansion will provide coverage for 600,000 North Carolinians.

In March, bipartisan law makers passed the Medicaid expansion, ending a decade-long debate. North Carolina was one of the ten states in the U.S. that had not adopted the expansion. The expansion will benefit groups such as farmers, fishermen, and veterans who often fall in the coverage gap.

The Medicaid expansion in North Carolina will increase eligibility to adults aged 19-64 with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level. This includes single individuals earning under $20,000 a year and families of three earning under $34,000 combined. Beneficiaries receive the same comprehensive benefits and copays as other non-disabled adults in Medicaid.
