Residents are eagerly awaiting the annual Grand Rapids Applebutter Fest, where thousands will gather to enjoy the popular apple spread. A total of 45 bushels of apples have been prepped for Sunday’s fest—the 46th year of this cherished community event.

Community Efforts and Festival Impact

The festival is a significant event for Grand Rapids, with over 40,000 attendees expected. “We pretty much shut the town down over the weekend,” says Chuck Thomas, festival co-chair. The event relies heavily on local support, including that of many community volunteers who’ve been helping since September.

Participation and Pride in the Fest

Among those lending a hand is Production line manager Angie Studer, who says, “This is an incredible tradition that brings the community together.” She’s proud of the hard work everyone puts in, especially her team on the production line.

The Apple Butter Process

The process of cooking apple butter takes five to six hours, involving canning, wiping, lidding, labeling, and selling. While much of the apple butter is made beforehand, there will be two kettles at the festival for attendees to get a hands-on experience. “People can come in and stir, they can participate and help in the canning,” Thomas says, ensuring a memorable experience at the Applebutter Fest.
