Ishpeming Welcomes First Farmers’ Market with Handmade Goods and Fresh Produce
The first farmers’ market in Ishpeming, Mich., opened its doors on Sunday, offering a variety of crafts and baked goods. Fresh vegetables, homemade jams, and cookies created by locals were among the items available, filling a need for vendors to showcase their products to the community.
Kelly Milano, Farmers’ Market Coordinator, indicated the market’s opening has greatly benefited residents who found it challenging to travel to the Marquette farmer’s market. The community is primed for growth and change, and hopes are that the new market kickstarts this.
Approximately 30 vendors set up their stalls, selling a diverse range of products including plants, dog treats, crocheted crafts, and candy. Milano hopes the variety of offerings will attract a broad spectrum of shoppers.
Local vendor Pamela Perkins offers homemade jams made from hand-grown fruit, including red currants, which are unavailable in local stores. Perkins is keen to support local agriculture.
Perkins and market shopper Rosemary Aho agree that healthy foods are often costly in supermarkets, and local produce isn’t as readily accessible. Aho appreciates the freshness of the produce at the market, noting that it retains more nutrients than store-bought alternatives.
The Ishpeming Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. To become a vendor, contact Milano through the market’s Facebook page.
