TL/DR –

U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake criticized President Joe Biden’s comment describing a Trump supporter as “garbage,” and suggested it would backfire for Democrats. Lake, who is running against U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., also criticized Gallego for his comments about Trump supporters in the past. Despite her campaign reporting $2.4 million in debt, compared to Gallego’s debt-free campaign, Lake remains optimistic about her chances, citing a recent public poll that showed her leading by 1 percentage point.

U.S. Senate Candidate Kari Lake Attacks President Biden’s Remarks

U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake criticized President Joe Biden’s comments calling a Trump supporter “garbage,” describing it as inappropriate in politics and predicting it will backfire on Democrats. While at a San Tan Valley voting area, Lake, an ex-TV news anchor, expressed optimism about her campaign against U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and attempted to link him to political putdowns.

She was reacting to Biden’s statement to a Latino group, where he compared a Trump supporter to garbage after the individual made a joke about Puerto Rico. Biden later clarified his words were not a broader insult of Trump’s supporters. Vice President Kamala Harris has distanced herself from his comments.

Lake, who regularly refers to Gallego as “rotten,” “radical” and a “deadbeat,” portrayed Trump supporters as the victims of inflammatory rhetoric and said they are tired of name-calling. She affirmed her respect for all voters, regardless of their political affiliations.

She referred to Gallego’s 2016 explanation to Arizona PBS about why Trump won the election as evidence of his negative view of Trump supporters.

The focus on harsh language has become more prominent after Trump’s New York City rally, where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a joke about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage.” Biden later responded by criticizing Hinchcliffe and his supporters.

Lake described Biden’s comment as a “punch in the gut” and said Harris refers to Trump supporters as “Nazis.” Other Republicans nationwide have similarly criticized his comment.

Gallego responded to Lake’s words by stating his intent to represent all Arizonans, regardless of who they vote for. He has not yet responded to Lake’s personal attacks.

Lake, who has built her political persona around her own sharp words, has disparaged Gallego personally and those who support Democrats. She once told supporters of the late U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to “get the hell out.”

Despite the verbal disagreements, Lake remains confident about her campaign’s chances of winning the race next week. A public poll found her leading by 1 percentage point, the first time since July. As of mid-October, Lake’s campaign had slightly more cash available than Gallego’s, $3.2 million compared to his $2.8 million.
