Guilty Plea in Asheville Drug Trafficking Case

In Asheville, N.C., Steven Daniel Opsahl, 46, has pleaded guilty to felony drug charges following two separate traffic stops revealing possession of meth and fentanyl within one month. The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the charges, which include trafficking in fentanyl and methamphetamine.

According to District Attorney Todd Williams, Asheville police first stopped Opsahl on March 8, 2023, for expired registration and inspection violation, discovering he had outstanding warrants. A subsequent search at the Buncombe County Detention Facility revealed a baggie containing 66 grams of methamphetamine hidden in his clothing.

Buncombe County deputies stopped Opsahl again on March 23, 2023, arresting him for driving on a revoked license and expired registration. This stop resulted in the discovery of six grams of fentanyl in Opsahl’s vehicle. This comes as law enforcement report a 19% drop in violent crime in Asheville.

Judge Karen Eady-Williams sentenced Opsahl to a prison term of 70-93 months and imposed a $50,000 fine.
