California Cliffside Rescue of Trapped Man
A California man, trapped on a cliffside for several days, was eventually rescued by first responders in an almost 24-hour daring effort.
The man was finally extricated on Friday morning from a hole located near the Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, California, as the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The 19-hour rescue operation was described as “treacherous” by the San Diego fire department (SDFD).
The man had slipped and fallen under broken rocks at the cliff’s edge, becoming wedged in a small crevice. Trapped from the waist down in an 18in wide hole, the rescue efforts were further challenged, according to ABC News.
The individual claimed to have been trapped under the rocks for at least three days, KGTV reported. A group of teenagers heard his cries for help and alerted 911.
Rescuers from SDFD and Chula Vista fire department arrived at the scene around 4pm Pacific standard time. However, rising tides and weather conditions forced a temporary halt to the rescue overnight.
There were concerns about the man potentially drowning due to high tides and rain, as water filled the cavity where his legs were trapped, San Diego fire-rescue deputy chief of operations, Dan Eddy, stated.
Micro-explosives were used to break up the heavy rocks and dislodge the man. Following his rescue around 11am on Friday, he was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
The man had sustained injuries but was conscious and alert, expressing gratitude to the rescue crews.
