TL/DR –
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Arizona and the nonpartisan watchdog group American Oversight are suing Pinal County sheriff and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Lamb for allegedly failing to respond to records requests in violation of state law. The lawsuit relates to five public records requests filed by American Oversight from 2020 to 2023, seeking Lamb’s potential communications on election fraud, voter fraud, and election-related laws. According to American Oversight, the records could help understand Lamb’s connections with groups and individuals who tried to undermine confidence in the 2020 election and his attendance at a 2022 immigration reform rally.
ACLU and American Oversight Sue Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb
The ACLU of Arizona and nonpartisan watchdog group American Oversight are suing Pinal County sheriff and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Lamb over alleged failure to respond to records requests in violation of Arizona state law.
The lawsuit surrounds five public records requests by American Oversight from 2020 to 2023. These requests seek Lamb’s communications regarding election fraud, voter fraud, and election-related laws with various federal, state officials, private citizens, as well as groups and individuals who allegedly undermined confidence in the 2020 election.
American Oversight’s interim executive director, Chioma Chukwu, expressed concern over Lamb’s connections with those claiming widespread voter fraud. “Sheriff Lamb and Pinal County have flagrantly disregarded their obligations under Arizona’s Public Records Law, and the public has a right to know how his office operates and uses county resources,” Chukwu stated.
Connections to the “Constitutional Sheriffs” Movement
ACLU of Arizona Staff Attorney Lauren Beall suggests the records could reveal Lamb’s ties to the “constitutional sheriffs” movement, which asserts the authority to refuse enforcement of any law deemed unjust or unconstitutional by a sheriff. “Sheriff Lamb is not above the law. Like all government officials, he must promptly provide records when requested,” Beall said.
At a recent online forum with GOP U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, Lamb expressed doubt about Joe Biden’s election results, stating, “I don’t think Joe Biden got 81 million votes.” However, official records show that Biden received 81,268,924 votes in the 2020 presidential general election.
Despite the lawsuit, Lamb’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
