TL/DR –

Amalija Knavs, the mother of former first lady Melania Trump, has passed away according to a post on Melania’s social media accounts. Knavs and her husband, Viktor, originally from Slovenia, were frequent visitors to Washington during Trump’s presidency, and they became US citizens in 2018 through the sponsorship of their daughter. Despite this, Donald Trump had previously criticized family-based migration, often referring to it as “chain migration.”

Amalija Knavs, Melania Trump’s Mother, Passes Away

Amalija Knavs, the mother of former first lady Melania Trump, has passed away according to a social media post by her daughter.

Trump described Knavs as a woman of strength, grace, warmth, and dignity, who was deeply devoted to her family. She expressed the family’s grief and intent to honor Knavs’ legacy on her Twitter account.

A campaign advisor for former President Donald Trump confirmed the news of Knavs’ demise to CNN.

Originally from Slovenia, Knavs worked in the textile industry. With her husband, Viktor, she moved to the U.S. and was often seen in Washington after Trump’s 2017 inauguration. The couple, now retired, regularly interacted with the Trump family, often accompanying them on trips to Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, New Jersey.

Until 2016, the Knavs owned a house in Sevnica, Slovenia, where Melania attended primary school. However, they had mostly resided in New York since the birth of their grandson Barron Trump in 2006.

The Knavs became US citizens in 2018, through the sponsorship of their daughter Melania, a practice often criticized by Donald Trump as “chain migration”.

Melania Trump, herself a US citizen since 2006, is the second foreign-born first lady in US history. Following their departure from Washington in January 2021, she has largely stayed out of public view.
