Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey identified 28-year-old Jamal Mitchell as the police officer who lost his life in the incident. The second officer is expected to recover.
The Minneapolis Police Department reported that the incident began around 5:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on Blaisdell Avenue South, following a shots fired call. Officers were immediately met with gunfire upon arrival.
Officer Mitchell was providing medical assistance to two injured men about two blocks away from the original call’s location when he was “ambushed,” stated Drew Evans from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
One of the men Mitchell was assisting died at the scene, while the other sustained significant injuries. An innocent bystander was also critically injured during the incident, along with a firefighter who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Mitchell had previously received recognition for his work with the Minneapolis Police Department after rescuing an elderly couple from a burning house. “He was courageous… He was exceptional in every way,” said Katie Blackwell, Assistant Chief of Operations at the Minneapolis Police Department.
Eye Witness Account and Response
Local resident Reuben Molina described hearing the gunshots: “Me and my girlfriend, we heard really loud banging at first… Then we heard it again and again and again in rapid succession.”
The Minnesota State Patrol, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were among the agencies responding to the incident. Local residents were urged to avoid the area. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed support for the first responders and assured readiness to provide necessary resources.
St. Paul Police Department officers patrolled Minneapolis on Thursday night, with St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter expressing condolences and support for the impacted community. A wave of responses from state leaders and agencies followed the tragic event.
