TL/DR –

The article presents the argument for universal health coverage in the United States. The author highlights the challenges of the current health system including high costs of treatments and insurance premiums, as well as barriers to accessing care. The writer suggests that the Medicare for All Acts, which would extend Medicare coverage to all Americans, could solve many of these issues, and calls for public support to persuade politicians to adopt this system.

An Analysis: Healthcare Costs and Potential Solutions

The financial burden of healthcare is a well-established concern in the US, with stories frequently emerging about individuals delaying or foregoing care due to copays, deductibles, or surprise charges. The issue is further exacerbated by increasing premiums, prior authorization requirements, outright denials by insurance companies, and a shortage of healthcare clinicians. However, is there a possible solution to this crisis?

One potential solution is universal health coverage, a system used by most wealthy countries, where everyone is covered at low or no out-of-pocket cost, funded by taxes. These systems differ in their implementation but share common characteristics, such as no country reverting back from them once adopted.

In the US, there are proposals such as the “Medicare for All Acts” (S. 1506 and HR. 3069) that aim to extend the Medicare system to cover all citizens. These bills propose to cover everything, including mental health, vision, hearing, long-term care, and hospitalization costs. The fact that Medicare has been serving seniors and people with disabilities since 1965 provides a tested structure to build upon.

However, the concern arises whether we can afford it. While taxes may increase for some, the elimination of premiums, copays and deductibles will potentially lead to a net financial benefit for most people. Much of the additional cost could be offset by the removal of insurance company administrative costs and profits. Such a move would not only save money, but it also transforms the system’s goal towards providing health care rather than generating profits.

Surprisingly, the majority of Americans support such a system according to polls. The resistance seems to come from the political realm, with many politicians hesitating to back the Medicare for All bills. One reason could be the large donations these politicians receive from profit-driven insurance companies.

The need for change is evident, and it’s time for the public to voice their opinions. Writing to senators and representatives is a viable way for citizens to express their support for these bills. It’s time for a healthcare system that truly serves the people.
