TL/DR –

Raleigh, North Carolina, experienced increased tourist visits in 2021, thanks to events such as the National Hockey League Stadium Series and Dreamville. The Greater Raleigh Convention Visitor’s Bureau (GRCVB) is striving to reach its goal of hosting 22 million visitors by 2028. The expansion of international travel at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), which includes flights to Mexico City and Frankfurt, Germany, this summer, is expected to further boost tourism.

Raleigh’s Tourist Attraction Increases with Big Events Coming Up

As renowned events like the NHL Stadium Series and Dreamville graced Raleigh last year, the city continues to attract more visitors. Raleigh has been hosting major sports events like the Women’s Lacrosse National Championship and Soccer Tournament, which is a novelty in the US, according to Loren Gold, Executive Vice President of the Greater Raleigh Convention Visitor’s Bureau (GRCVB).

This year, more such events are lined up. The GRCVB is also dedicated to achieving its goal of attracting 22 million visitors to Raleigh by 2028 and the plans for the future are quite ambitious.

“Our schedule includes hosting four NCAA championships in 2024, Dreamville’s return, and the last year of IBMA Bluegrass Live alongside Galaxycon,” Gold shared enthusiastically.

Cary’s Soccer Tournament Returns with Women’s Edition

In addition to the men’s championship, a new women’s tournament has been introduced in the 2024 Soccer Tournament in Cary, where teams would be competing for a one-million-dollar prize.

Given these plans, Gold is optimistic about a significant increase in the number of visitors in 2024. “We’ve set our target at 21.7 million by 2028 and we’re confident of reaching our goal,” mentioned Gold.

Apart from these events, initiatives like international travel expansion at RDU are expected to boost tourism. This summer, RDU plans to offer international flights to Mexico City and Frankfurt, thereby paving way for more international tourists in Raleigh.
