The 56-year-old Senator was taken to the hospital after falling near his residence in Braddock, Pennsylvania on November 13. In his latest update on social media, Fetterman narrates his ordeal, expressing his gratitude for the outpour of well wishes and for the exceptional medical care he received at UPMC.

After his fall caused by a cardiac event, Fetterman was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh. An evaluation revealed a ventricular fibrillation flare-up, leading to the Senator feeling light-headed and subsequently falling, according to a statement by his spokesperson on social media.

A ventricular fibrillation, as explained by Mayo Clinic, is an irregular heart rhythm or arrhythmia that requires immediate medical attention and is a common cause of sudden cardiac death.

Before this, Fetterman had a stroke in May 2022 and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. He also spent a night in the hospital for lightheadedness in February 2023. Shortly after this hospitalization, Fetterman admitted himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for clinical depression.

During an interview with PEOPLE after his 44-day hospital stay, Fetterman talked about his depression and encouraged others to seek help.

Recent concerns about the Senator’s mental health were raised by current and former Fetterman staff members in a May 2025 New York magazine feature. Fetterman dismissed these allegations in an interview with CNN, remarking that his doctors have confirmed his wellness and describing the discussion of his medical data as “incredibly invasive.”
