A Community Reparations Summit will be held on October 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center to discuss the draft recommendations which cover five areas: criminal justice, economic development, education, health and wellness, and housing. Prior to the summit, two free movie nights will be hosted by UNC Asheville on October 2 and October 5 to initiate the conversation.


Asheville Community Reparations Commission Seeks Public Engagement

Asheville’s Community Reparations Commission aims to address racial disparities. Launched in July 2020, it has been devising recommendations for Asheville City and Buncombe County Government since March 2022. However, the effectiveness of these suggestions depends on community endorsement.

Invitation to the Community Reparations Summit

The City, County, and the UNC Asheville Department of Education and Africana Studies Program are hosting a Community Reparations Summit on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event, located at UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center, will present the drafted recommendations and gather public feedback. These suggestions cover five areas: criminal justice, economic development, education, health + wellness, and housing.

How to Participate in the Summit

While the Summit is free to attend, registration is necessary. To facilitate more in-depth discussions, UNC Asheville will host two free movie nights on Monday, Oct. 2 and Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
