Kent County Sheriff’s Office Undergoing Assessment by Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Program

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office in Grand Rapids, Michigan is being examined by the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (MLEAP) this week. The assessment focuses on the sheriff’s office policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services. The goal is to ensure that they are meeting MLEAP’s “best practice” standards. The MLEAP team, comprising employees from other Michigan law enforcement agencies, will be arriving on Monday.

From 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, residents are welcomed to provide feedback directly to the MLEAP assessors. They can do this via phone call at 616.632.6102 or email at KentSheriff@KentCountyMI.gov. The sheriff’s office has set a limit of five minutes for each telephone comment. It is required that comments address the agency’s ability to comply with the Commission’s standards.

Residents may also choose to mail their feedback to the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission at 3474 Alaiedon Pkwy, Suite 600, Okemos, MI 48864.

To achieve accreditation from MLEAP, Kent County Sheriff’s Office must meet 108 standards. The full list of these standards can be acquired from the sheriff’s office located at 701 Ball Avenue NE in Grand Rapids.

Once accredited, the validity lasts for three years as long as the agency continues to meet the standards and submits annual reports confirming this, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
