TL/DR –

Two Roosters Ice Cream in North Carolina has introduced a new flavor called Chocolate Chess Pie. The flavor, which gained popularity after being submitted during a home chef series, includes homemade chocolate chess pie pieces mixed into chocolate ice cream. The flavor has become a hit among customers but is only available for a limited time during November.

Discovering Chocolate Chess Pie Ice Cream at Two Roosters

Understanding the origin of America’s “chess pie” is complex. However, my introduction to it was through my mother’s exceptional homemade chocolate chess pies. Notably, these are not like the ones at Raleigh’s Angus Barn steakhouse. They are, simply, better.

My favorite pie, these chocolate wonders set my standard for chocolate desserts, along with my Aunt Dot’s chocolate cake. While I’m not a fan of milk chocolate or “white chocolate”, I was intrigued by the Chocolate Chess Pie flavor at Two Rooster’s Ice Cream shop. Contrary to my expectations, it was a delightful, rich, dark chocolate ice cream with crunchy pie crust bits.

As I enjoyed it, I raved about it to my mom and on social media, stirring interest among friends and colleagues. Some even made late-night trips to get their own taste of what might be the best ice cream I’ve ever had.

The Inspiration Behind the Flavor

I contacted Jared Plummer, owner of Two Roosters, and learned that the flavor was suggested by home chef Annie Wright as part of their Home Chef series. In this series, customers submit flavor ideas, and the best ones are made and showcased in the shops for a month. When they received Wright’s suggestion, Plummer knew they had to make it. The process involves making chess pies in-house, chopping them up, and adding them to the chocolate ice cream.

While chess pie typically reminds me of Thanksgiving, it’s a great dessert year-round. However, the Chocolate Chess Pie Ice Cream is only available in November. Despite its popularity and repeated requests to make it a permanent flavor, Plummer explains that their philosophy is to keep their offerings similar to a theater, changing up the shows frequently.
