Boost Health with PNW’s October Exercise is Medicine Month
Exercise is Medicine® Month at Purdue University Northwest
On October 3, 2024, Purdue University Northwest (PNW) proudly announces its commitment to promote a healthy and active campus lifestyle, as recognized by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Since 2021, PNW has been acknowledged for its efforts in advocating the Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) On Campus program. To further this achievement, PNW was esteemed as an EIM Silver Campus in 2023, due largely to our EIM series and our Center for Healthy Living wellness clinic.
The Goals of the Exercise is Medicine® Initiative
ACSM’s EIM initiative aims at “incorporating movement as part of the daily campus culture” and “equipping students with the tools to develop lifelong healthy physical activity habits.” A key objective of EIM On Campus is to train current and prospective healthcare professionals to understand physical activity as a crucial health indicator. This includes assessing a person’s weekly engagement in moderate to strenuous exercise and the average duration of such exercise.
Health Benefits of Regular Exercise
Regular physical activity and exercise provide multiple health benefits and are known to decrease the risk of chronic diseases like hypertension and type II diabetes. ACSM acknowledges that moderate-intensity exercise offers curative and protective health advantages and is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Considering these extensive benefits, October is declared Exercise is Medicine® Month at Purdue University Northwest.
