Long Island’s “Captain America” Faces Rare Cancer

When news broke that a popular Long Island personal trainer, fondly referred to as “Captain America,” has been diagnosed with leptomeningeal disease, the community immediately rallied. This rare cancer of the cerebrospinal fluid and tissue covering the brain, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic, affects the brain and spinal cord and currently has no known cure.

A Community Rallies for a Beloved Personal Trainer

In a GoFundMe campaign launched to support Mike Emmel, famed Blue Point resident and personal trainer, the rare leptomeningeal disease is explained further. The disease, in Emmel’s case, is described as having an aggressive form that has resulted in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors throughout his brain, spine, and spinal fluid.

The Determination of a Fitness Champion

Ryan Smith, the organizer of the fundraiser, highlighted Mike’s integral role at Unique Fitness in Holbrook since 2019. “Mike’s dedication to fitness, relentless determination, motivating workouts, and positive attitude have impacted all who have had the privilege to meet him,” he mentioned. Amidst the uncertain future, Emmel remains resilient, ready to face this formidable challenge head-on.

Medical Interventions and Community Support

Doctors are currently exploring treatment options, such as protein radiation and chemotherapy, to prevent the cancer from spreading further. Smith appeals for support, thoughts, and prayers, as they strive to lessen the financial strain of medical expenses and ensure the best possible care for Mike. He rallies the community, saying, “Let’s stand by Captain America and demonstrate the strength of our fitness family.”

The GoFundMe campaign was successful in raising over $37,000 from nearly 200 donators as of Wednesday, April 10. For those interested in contributing, you can donate here.
