Kinesiology Students Deliver Stellar Presentations at Conference
Thematic Poster Session Presentation
Several distinguished individuals showcased their research in a thematic poster session that included:
- Alexander Wright’s exploration on “Sweat profiling amongst Ranger Challenge teams: assessing the Spartan needs“.
- Madilynn Zoumberis’ study on how “Astaxanthin supplementation improves cognitive performance following mental fatigue in recreationally active females”.
Regular Poster Session Presentation
Interesting research presentations were also carried out during the regular poster session by:
- Jake Frantz and Angella Sampogna, who compared the effectiveness of GLP-1 injections and patches on body composition changes in women with obesity.
- Taylor Hunter, who questioned the effectiveness of FMS screening in identifying acute/chronic joint pain in otherwise healthy individuals.
- Brooke Karmilovich, who examined the effects of exercise, mood, and menstrual cycle on females via her research titled “Female exercise, mood and menstrual effects via accelerometry and cycle training (FEMME-ACT)”.
- Jordan Lovelace, who discovered that Astaxanthin supplementation can reduce subjective markers of muscle soreness following eccentric exercise in recreationally active females.
- Daisy Oliver, who examined the effects of single-leg cycling on early-stage diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Symposium Faculty Presentations
Several faculty members also had the opportunity to present in a symposium.
Student Involvement in Research
Students Brett Miller and Zoumberis participated in data collection for the sweat profiling research presented by Wright. Wright, a senior from Rome, Georgia, is currently pursuing a degree in kinesiology with a health and fitness concentration. Their work with the Ranger Challenge cadets has been fruitful and rewarding, as it has provided a model for others nationally.
“Our student researchers are getting to learn at an incredibly fast pace in an in-depth manner,” Hyde, an associate professor of kinesiology, said. “And our cadets are seeing what it’s like to be part of an elite high-performance team.”
Future Plans for Student Researchers
Frantz, a junior from Woodstock, Georgia, is currently pursuing a degree in kinesiology with an exercise science concentration. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in kinesiology and then a Ph.D. in exercise physiology with the goal of teaching at a university.
SEACSM Student Quiz Bowl
UNG also had its SEACSM student quiz bowl team of Oliver, Wright, Hunter, and Penelope Hobgood finish 12th out of 42 teams.
