YMCA of Greater Michiana to Open New Campus in Downtown South Bend

The YMCA of Greater Michiana is set to unveil a new campus in a downtown South Bend fitness center that is currently managed by a hospital system. This exciting development is a significant stride in expanding the reach of affordable fitness amenities in the area.

YMCA’s Expansion into Memorial Leighton Healthplex

While maintaining its operations at the O’Brien Center on the city’s south side, the YMCA is planning to relocate into the third and fourth floors of the Memorial Leighton Healthplex, at 111 W. Jefferson Blvd. The site is conveniently located just across Main Street from the St. Joseph County Courthouse. The YMCA will assume control of the fitness center currently run by Beacon Health System, a local hospital system that will allow its members to transition over to the YMCA without any fees.

Important Dates and Information on the YMCA’s Move

YMCA members will be able to use the new facility as of June, following Beacon’s departure by May 31. The deal is scheduled to be presented before the South Bend Redevelopment Commission for approval at its meeting this coming Thursday.

Jefferson Boulevard Site Ownership and Development Deal

The city of South Bend assumed ownership of the Jefferson Boulevard site in late March as part of a multi-million dollar development deal involving Beacon. The hospital system will keep the first floor of the building on the lot’s south side for its physical rehabilitation programs and office space until it relocates them in the future.

YMCA’s Rent-Free Lease and Building Donation

In exchange for a rent-free lease for eight years, the YMCA will donate its old building at 1201 Northside Blvd. to the city. The city, represented by the executive director of South Bend’s Department of Community Investment, Caleb Bauer, has plans to demolish the site eventually and pursue redevelopment.

Features of the New YMCA Downtown South Bend Location

In addition to weight training equipment and cardio machines, plans for the new downtown facility include a basketball court, a racquetball court, an indoor track, a lap pool, and classes for aquatic and fitness training. Beacon is donating much of its equipment to the YMCA, helping ensure a seamless transition for fitness enthusiasts in the region.

Continued Partnership with South Bend Venues, Parks and Arts

The YMCA plans to sign a new three-year agreement with South Bend Venues, Parks and Arts to continue its operations at the O’Brien Center, its fitness center at 321 E. Walter St. Bauer expressed the city’s gratitude towards the YMCA for helping maintain a downtown fitness location and expressed the city’s excitement to continue and expand their partnership with the YMCA.
