Best U.S. Small Towns for Fall Foliage 2023 – Pennsylvania Represented

Two Pennsylvania locales recently shone among other renowned spots nationwide acclaimed for their stunning fall foliage. This recognition came from a list compiled and published by Country Living magazine, highlighting the 55 best U.S. small towns for fall foliage. The list showcases nominees from the California coast to New England, offering a delightful blend of vivid foliage and fall-themed entertainment suitable for all ages.

Although Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts, topped the list, Pennsylvania was well-represented. Let’s delve into the Pennsylvania towns featured among Country Living’s fall foliage favorites for 2023.

Wellsboro, Pennsylvania

Ranked ninth among Country Living’s top U.S. small towns for autumn leaves, Wellsboro serves as the county seat of Tioga County in north-central Pennsylvania. Established in the early 1800s, Wellsboro is home to approximately 3,472 residents according to 2020 U.S. Census estimates.

Country Living commends the area’s natural attractions, making it an ideal spot for admiring the fall colors. “Considering the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania lives here, Wellsboro is an absolute must-see when adorned in autumn hues,” the magazine recommends.

The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, officially known as the Pine Creek Gorge, received the National Natural Landmark designation in 1968. Visitors can enjoy a hike along the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail, stargazing at Cherry Spring State Park close by, and exploring Wellsboro’s downtown area famous for its iconic gas lamps.

Colleen Hanson, Executive Director of Visit Potter-Tioga PA, expressed her delight at the recognition. She highlighted the area’s various attractions that continually draw visitors back throughout the year, leaf-peeping season being just one of them. Located within the Pocono Mountains near the upper limit of the Delaware River, Milford offers a unique setting for viewing autumn leaves. “To witness the Pocono Mountains bursting with fall colors, plan your visit to this picturesque town for a weekend in October or November,” suggests Country Living.

Visitors can join in the celebration of the autumn season at the annual Milford fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The festival features costume contests, “pooch parades”, and more, according to the event page.

Consider taking a guided tour of the Poconos, shopping at local farmers markets, a scenic train ride, or a hike beneath the fall leaves when in the Milford area. For more ideas on entertainment in the area, visit poconomountains.com/things-to-do.
