Win Big at Camp Zama’s Annual Weight Loss Challenge 2021
Maximize Your Fitness Goals at Camp Zama’s Annual Weight Loss Competition
Are you aiming to meet your New Year’s fitness resolutions or improve your overall health? Starting this Friday, you can sign up for the annual weight loss competition at Camp Zama, an ideal platform for achieving a healthy weight and body composition.
Join the “Biggest Loser” Competition at Camp Zama
The “Biggest Loser” competition, scheduled from Feb. 3 through March 19, is designed to inspire participants to shed pounds while accomplishing their fitness goals in a community environment. According to Maria Wallace, the lead health educator at the Armed Forces Wellness Center, joining the program not only makes participants more active and involved, but also motivates them towards achieving their goals thanks to the competitive element and the accountability it brings.
Benefits of Joining the Self-Directed Fitness Program
Organized by the wellness center and Yano Fitness Center, this self-directed fitness program promotes health education and behavior change, helping participants to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and body composition. The program is limited to 35 participants, which can include active-duty military members, retirees, federal civilian employees, and adult family members. Military members can register now before the general registration opens on Friday. The competition attracts a $20 fee, but is free for military members.
Awards and Incentives for Participants
Participants stand a chance of winning several prizes, including awards for top male and female competitors and those who record the maximum number of steps or exercise the most at fitness centers on Camp Zama, Sagamihara Family Housing Area, and Sagami General Depot. All participants will receive a contest T-shirt and expert advice from AFWC professionals throughout the program.
Perspective on Long-Term Health Improvement
Wallace hopes that the progress made during the program will motivate participants to maintain their fitness journey, leading to a sustained healthy lifestyle in the long run. She says, “If it becomes a long-term habit, we may be able to help them walk in the park with their grandkids or open a jar of pickles when they’re older. Hopefully, we can sneak in a little bit of long-term health improvement for them.”
Progress Tracking and Learning Opportunities
Participants will undergo assessments to track their progress, including the Bod Pod system, a body composition test that determines the ratio of body fat to lean mass. Metabolic testing will be available to help participants identify their unique target caloric zone, and they can use biofeedback to see how their bodies respond to stress. Additionally, participants can attend classes to learn weight management strategies in sleep, nutrition, and activity areas.
Impressive Results from the Previous Year
Last year, participants lost a total of nearly 120 pounds of fat mass during the program. They also gained nearly 16 pounds of fat-free mass, typically muscle – which can be challenging when trying to lose weight.
Commit to Healthy Living
For those contemplating joining this year’s contest, Wallace says it’s a great opportunity to adopt a healthier lifestyle. She encourages potential participants to view it as a fun way to improve their lifestyle and start something that will benefit them in the long term.
