Hamas Dissolves Gaza Government, Transfers Power to UN-Backed Committee

TL/DR –

Hamas is dissolving its government in the Gaza Strip and preparing to hand over power to a United Nations-backed committee, as part of a U.S. brokered ceasefire deal. The move does not clarify whether Hamas will disarm or pass on security to an international force. Hamas, Israel, and the Board of Peace, led by President Donald Trump, continue to negotiate the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, particularly the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of Gaza.

Hamas Dissolves Gaza Government

In a significant move, Hamas proclaimed on Monday that it has dissolved its government in Gaza and is preparing to hand over power to a UN-backed committee, as part of a US-mediated ceasefire agreement. The group didn’t clarify if it intends to disarm or hand over security to an international force.

Hamas’ decision to dissolve the government is perceived as evidence of its dedication to Gaza’s reconstruction after prolonged years of warfare. However, the Gaza’s future remains uncertain.

The newly formed entity, The Board of Peace, led by President Donald Trump, has the task of overseeing governing and rebuilding Gaza. It noted that the technocratic committee must control all weapons in Gaza, as laid out in the ceasefire agreement.

A New Era for Gaza

Ismail al-Thawabta, the general director of the Hamas-run Government Media Office, stated that only “technical and professional staff” would manage the Palestinian enclave’s everyday affairs. Israeli officials dismissed this announcement, calling it insignificant.

The technocratic committee, based in Cairo, is tasked with restoring essential services and managing civilian affairs under the UN and Board of Peace’s supervision.

Despite the ceasefire agreement signed nine months ago, negotiations remain largely deadlocked over Hamas’ disarmament and the reconstruction of Gaza.

Conflict History

The war was triggered by an attack by Hamas-led militants on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people in Israel and taking 251 others hostage. Israel’s counter-offensive in Gaza resulted in the death of 73,098 Palestinians.

Israeli strikes have significantly reduced since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, but they continue on an almost daily basis. On Monday, Israeli strikes claimed the lives of five people in Gaza.
