Clean air advocates are promoting the benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) amidst what they perceive as disinformation from the U.S. petroleum industry. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is educating Pennsylvanians about the advantages of EVs, including cost-effectiveness, performance, popularity, and their positive impact on public health and the environment. The advocates are pushing back against an ad campaign by the American Petroleum Institute, which they claim falsely suggests the transition to a green economy will force drivers to give up their traditional cars.

Clean Air Advocates Promote Electric Vehicles Benefits Amid Petroleum Industry Misinformation

In response to alleged misinformation from the U.S. petroleum industry, clean air advocates are underscoring the advantages of electric vehicles (EVs). The Environmental Defense Fund’s partner EDF Action, along with public health and labor representatives, is discussing with Pennsylvanians the benefits of EVs, including pricing, performance, and their positive impact on public health and the environment.

“Our goal is to equip people with accurate facts, as there is a lot of misinformation available,” stated David Kieve, president of EDF Action. He believes that if presented with the truth, more Pennsylvanians will opt for an electric vehicle.

Kieve points out that the American Petroleum Institute has launched an ad campaign claiming, without proof, that the movement towards a green economy will force drivers to abandon gas-powered vehicles. This statement has been refuted by Biden administration officials.

He highlighted that EV ownership and operational costs are declining, with battery technology becoming more affordable. Furthermore, the range of many EV models has significantly increased, and EV production in the U.S. has outpaced all other regions.

“Accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, combat climate change and improve air quality, particularly in light of the heat wave on the East Coast,” Kieve argued.

Edwin Hill of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers stressed that enhancements in battery technology are spurring increased EV sales. “These improved batteries hold more power, which either requires more charging time or a higher charging rate,” he noted.

The U.S. government and auto industry are investing billions in EV development and manufacturing, resulting in nearly 200,000 new jobs.
