New Poll: Few Believe Biden’s Law Aids Climate Change Fight

Just 16% of respondents believe the IRA has helped combat climate change, while 30% think it has not made a difference and 41% don’t know enough to say. Around 35% believe tax credits for renewable energy projects have helped, but 26% think the tax credit initiative for individuals to switch to electric vehicles has made no difference.


Public Opinion on the Impact of the Inflation Reduction Act on Climate Change

A new poll reveals that a small percentage of Americans believe the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), approved by President Biden in 2022, has positively influenced the fight against climate change. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs and Research survey found that many respondents perceive the IRA’s impact on climate change to be negligible, while a significant number were uninformed about its repercussions.

Only 16% of respondents agreed that the IRA has contributed to combating climate change, 13% believed it’s worsened matters, while 30% stated it hasn’t made a significant difference. Meanwhile, 41% revealed they were unaware of its influence on climate change, as per the survey results.

In relation to specific climate change initiatives in the bill, many Americans confessed ignorance. The survey indicated that 35% of respondents believe tax credits for eco-friendly projects such as solar and wind power are beneficial. However, only 27% stated that federal support for clean energy projects in underprivileged regions has been effective.

As for the tax incentive for personal conversion to electric vehicles, 26% of respondents reported it made no difference. The highest response for any queried provision.

The survey revealed an overwhelming preference for the government to invest in eco-friendly technologies, with 57% of respondents deeming it extremely or very important. President Biden has emphasized the IRA’s role in bolstering local manufacturing and job growth. Accordingly, 34% of respondents believe the law encourages domestic production of clean energy technologies.

A dissatisfying 79% hold the federal government responsible for addressing climate change, with more than half (56%) stating it’s doing insufficiently to mitigate the issue.

The poll was conducted from April 4-8 among 1,204 adults, with a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.
