LS GreenLink to Build Offshore Wind Cable Manufacturing Facility in Virginia

U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner, Tim Kaine, and Representative Bobby Scott applaud the announcement of LS GreenLink’s $681 million investment in Chesapeake, Virginia to construct a state-of-the-art facility for offshore wind subsea cables. Made possible by $100 million in tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), this facility is the first of its kind in the United States and is projected to generate over 330 jobs.

Warner lauds the IRA legislation, emphasizing how it’s bolstering the clean energy industry while benefiting Virginia. “The new LS GreenLink facility will support the burgeoning U.S. offshore wind industry, bring hundreds of jobs to Hampton Roads, and spur investment in the region,” he adds.

Kaine echoes these sentiments, expressing his excitement for the influx of clean energy manufacturing jobs heading to Virginia thanks to the IRA. He also commends GreenLink’s decision to erect its facility in Chesapeake, attributing it to Hampton Roads’ strong workforce and vibrant community. He states, “This new facility is a win for workers, our economy, and all who rely on clean energy.”

“Thanks to the IRA’s inclusion of the Offshore Wind Manufacturing Act, LS GreenLink can utilize tax credits for projects that expand clean energy. Their investment in this new facility in Chesapeake will play a crucial role in building the domestic green energy supply chain. This investment in Hampton Roads is bringing high-paying jobs to our local economy and boosting our community’s transition towards clean, affordable energy,” Scott adds.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin expresses that LS GreenLink’s investment will position Virginia as a leader in offshore wind industry manufacturing, applauding the state’s skilled workforce, strategic location, and business-friendly environment. He says, “Virginia has what it takes to serve its growing global customer base for submarine power cables.”

Warner, Kaine, and Scott advocated for IRA funding for the project in a letter to the Department of Energy. They collectively voted for the IRA, which passed in the Senate by a single vote.
