Launched in 2006, About Care primarily aids homebound senior citizens and disabled individuals. “Our role is to bring socialization and community building into their homes,” said Ixcel Baca, the Volunteer Manager at About Care.
The nonprofit’s army of dedicated volunteers served over 600 clients throughout the Valley. They assist in transporting clients to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping, and more. “I get deeply connected with these people. They become my friends. I plan to continue doing this for as long as my health permits,” shared Ford Kitchel, a volunteer at About Care.
With a team of 160 volunteers, About Care strives to make the lives of their clients easier, enabling them to continue living at home comfortably. Doug Becker, a recipient of About Care’s services, said, “Growing old is a complicated process. With my health issues and lack of transportation, it’s very important to have an organization like About Care.”
Becker, who suffered a stroke and seizures, encourages others to volunteer. “We need more volunteers, not just seniors, but also working individuals who can spare some time to help,” he added.
