TL/DR –
The Arizona Supreme Court has upheld a near-total ban on abortion, causing a swift reaction among Republicans in the state. While some, like Senate candidate Kari Lake and former Governor Doug Ducey, have called for immediate common-sense solutions and policies reflective of the electorate, others like Republican Representative David Schweikert have denounced the ban. However, the Arizona Freedom Caucus and Senator Anthony Kern have remained consistent in their anti-abortion stance, with Kern stating that America cannot be healed if we continue to kill our children.
Arizona Supreme Court’s Abortion Ban Ruling Draws Mixed Reactions
The Arizona Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold a near-total abortion ban has led to a surprising retreat by several Republican leaders on their previous abortion stances.
Senate candidate Kari Lake, who previously lauded the 1864 abortion ban, is now calling on Gov. Katie Hobbs and the Legislature to find a “common sense solution” that Arizonans can support.
Similarly, former Gov. Doug Ducey, who signed a 15-week abortion ban in 2022, is urging the Legislature to address the issue in a way that reflects the will of the electorate.
Not all Republicans are backtracking on abortion
Despite this, some Republicans remain steadfast in their anti-abortion views. Republican Rep. David Schweikert, for instance, has co-sponsored a bill that states life begins at conception and has openly denounced the Supreme Court ruling. He is also urging the Legislature to take immediate action on this issue.
Other Republicans such as Sens. Shawnna Bolick, TJ Shope are likewise calling for the repeal of the 1864 abortion ban.
Some Republicans stick to their beliefs
On the other hand, some Republicans like Sen. Anthony Kern and members of the Arizona Freedom Caucus continue to express their unwavering opposition to abortion. Kern, who protested against Gov. Katie Hobbs’ call to repeal the 1864 law, remains steadfast in his view that abortion is wrong.
“Americans cannot expect our nation to be healed if we continue to kill our children,” Kern stated on social media. The Arizona Freedom Caucus similarly affirmed its commitment to protecting life, criticizing those who have chosen to support unrestricted abortions for the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Standing by their convictions
While there may be disagreements about abortion, there is something to be said about politicians who remain true to their convictions even when faced with significant backlash. Amidst the scramble of Republicans seeking to distance themselves from their previous stances, Kern and the Freedom Caucus stand out for their unwavering commitment to their beliefs.
If their fellow Republicans truly believe that a fertilized egg is a baby, then their reaction — bailing on the unborn — is indeed surprising. This raises the question: if they don’t stand for this, their core belief, then what do they stand for?
