The bell installation was initiated due to the wish of a local family, leading to the involvement of Clinical Nurse Supervisor Meg Kerr, who has dedicated 25 years of service to Mission Hospital. Kerr reached out to a friend at the illustrious Biltmore Estate, thereby bringing this wish to fruition.
The bell was handcrafted by Biltmore blacksmith Steve Schroeder, whose son was previously treated at Mission Children’s Hospital. His personal connection to the cause added a heartfelt touch to the project.
The first child to ring the bell was Cullen Gaston, a young patient diagnosed with leukemia at just seven months old. His mother, Rachel Gaston, expressed her family’s profound appreciation for the support they received from the hospital staff throughout Cullen’s treatment.
Following his remission and return home in July, Cullen has resumed normal childhood activities. The ringing of the bell symbolizes not just the end of a challenging journey, but also the start of a new chapter in life, Rachel Gaston shared.
