Flash Flood Warnings for Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties in California

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued flash flood warnings for Ventura and Santa Barbara counties in California. These warnings are expected to remain in place until midnight local time.

According to the NWS, an “extremely dangerous flood situation” is unfolding in the mountains and foothills of central Ventura County. Local enforcement agencies reported numerous flooded roads, submerged vehicles, rock and mudslides, and rapidly rising river levels.

“Between 3 and 7 inches of rain have fallen,” the NWS Los Angeles branch warned. “Additional rainfall of 1 to 4 inches is possible overnight tonight, particularly in Ventura County. Flash flooding is already occurring.”

The NWS has warned of the risk of life-threatening flash flooding in creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Debris flows, consisting of rock and mudslides, are also anticipated.

The flood warnings come just hours after a similar warning was issued for eastern Los Angeles County, including downtown LA and the venue for the Grammy Awards.

Areas that NWS has identified as potential flash flood zones include Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and others.
