Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of Mexican drug lord El Chapo, is expected to be released from a halfway house in Long Beach, California. She served around 18 months in a federal prison in Texas and in November 2021 was sentenced to three years for participating in her husband’s criminal empire and aiding his 2015 escape from custody. Despite admitting to aiding her husband in moving large quantities of drugs into the US, her case was considered simpler as she agreed to surrender $1.5 million in illicit proceeds from her husband’s operations, and she was not an organizer or leader of the operation.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of notorious Mexican drug lord El Chapo, is set for release from a Long Beach, Calif. residential re-entry facility, almost two years post her sentencing for aiding her husband’s criminal empire and his 2015 escape. Previously transferred from a Texas federal prison to the halfway house after an 18-month term, her release is confirmed by federal prison records reported by The Los Angeles Times.

The Criminal Convictions of Emma Coronel Aispuro

Emma Coronel, a former beauty queen and El Chapo’s wife since 2007, was sentenced to three years in November 2021. Earlier, she admitted to drug smuggling and assisting El Chapo’s prison escape in 2015. Guzman’s dramatic escape through a mile-long tunnel was globally reported, leading to his recapture six months later and extradition to the U.S.

Despite her husband’s conviction on drug conspiracy charges and life sentence, Coronel expressed unwavering loyalty, telling The New York Times in 2019 that she admired him as a human being.

Under her plea deal, Coronel agreed to forfeit about $1.5 million from her husband’s illegal operations, resulting in a relatively lighter sentence despite her admitted involvement in sizable drug dealings.

Public Interest Surrounding Emma Coronel Aispuro

A federal prosecutor labeled Coronel as merely a cog in the large wheel of the criminal organization. However, her extravagant lifestyle and social media habits have captured public interest. Her last social media post dates back to December 2020 on her verified Instagram account.
