An increase in Rio Ruidoso water levels from 1.7ft to over 5.5ft has led to flash flooding. The National Weather Service has reported people trapped in vehicles due to the flooding near Ruidoso. The Emergency Management of Rio Ruidoso has issued an evacuation notice for the unstable Upper Canyon area. Residents near the river are advised to seek higher ground immediately.

An evacuation shelter has been set up at the White Mountain Relief Center located at the White Mountain Sports Complex. There have also been reports of water rescues in the region and roads like Meacham Road Bridge and Paradise Canyon road near Rio Ruidoso are not passable at present.

The fast-moving flood waters have severely affected several homes in the Ruidoso region, particularly in the Upper Canyon area which is under evacuation. Local officials have advised residents and tourists to stay alert and cooperate fully with the rescue teams.

Heavy rain has significantly impacted the Village of Ruidoso. The flash flooding is believed to have been caused by a fresh burn scar in the area. The situation has led to the evacuation of certain parts of the village. The village has also reported several road closures, including Gavilan Canyon from Sutton to Meander, Paradise Canyon from Country Club to Phillips Circle and Hall Road from Royale to Paradise Canyon. The Upper Canyon area is particularly hazardous and should be avoided.

The flooding occurred as Ruidoso started reopening, with every fire-affected area made accessible to the public. Significant progress is being made in containing the fires. Reports suggest the South Fork Fire is 73% contained and the Salt Fire is now at 71% containment. The two fires have burned over 25,000 acres so far. The FBI is offering $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for these fires. Tips can be emailed to tips.fbi.gov or the number 1-800-CALL-FBI can be called.

Ruidoso residents who have not yet returned can check the condition of their homes using a map with footage taken by search and rescue teams. Addresses can be looked up with a description and picture of the home’s condition.
