TL/DR –
A conservative Washington, D.C. news organization, the Washington Free Beacon, has requested the sealed divorce records of U.S. Senate candidate Ruben Gallego and his ex-wife, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. The divorce is a matter of public interest because of Ruben Gallego’s role as a U.S. House Democrat from Arizona and the Free Beacon alleges that the couple split when Kate Gallego was nine months pregnant. Both Ruben and Kate Gallego have criticized the request, calling it a political stunt that endangers the safety of their son and have argued that the sealed information does not include allegations of abuse or misconduct.
Washington News Outlet Requests Unsealing of Senate Candidate’s Divorce Records
The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news organization, has requested a Yavapai County judge to unseal the divorce records of U.S. Senate candidate Ruben Gallego and his ex-wife, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. The request and related documents remain sealed and unavailable to the public.
The Free Beacon claims that Ruben Gallego’s actions are a matter of public interest, as he is a U.S. House Democrat from Arizona. Both the Free Beacon and Arizona Republican Senate front-runner Kari Lake have stated that the Gallegos divorced when Kate Gallego was nine months pregnant.
According to the Free Beacon, Ruben Gallego cited his post-traumatic stress disorder from serving in the Iraq War as a contributing factor to the divorce. He admitted to having “extreme outbursts,” leading the Free Beacon to question the nature of these outbursts and whether they involved threats or violence.
Ruben Gallego issued a statement attributing the Free Beacon’s legal effort to Lake, describing it as an attack on his family that jeopardizes his son’s safety. Kate Gallego, who supports keeping the records sealed, also linked the effort to Lake and criticized it as “the worst kind of sleaze”.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee responded to the issue, questioning how unsealing a divorce record could endanger a child’s safety. Mike Berg, the NRSC’s communications director, defended the Washington Free Beacon’s legal action, stating that the public deserves full transparency from their officials.
The Gallegos divorced in December 2016 after six years of marriage. At the time, they both requested privacy. Ruben Gallego briefly mentioned the divorce in his book “They Called Us Lucky,” stating that he and Kate remain friends and support each other’s careers. They have a 7-year-old son.
In December, Kate Gallego endorsed Ruben Gallego in his bid for the Senate seat held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz. Lake has criticized Ruben Gallego’s failed marriage, accusing him of abandoning his wife during her pregnancy.
