MICHIGAN GOVERNOR PARTICIPATES IN ANN ARBOR’S TAKE BACK THE NIGHT EVENT

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is set to participate in this year’s Take Back the Night event in Ann Arbor, a free annual rally addressing sexual violence awareness.

Slated for Wednesday, April 3, the event involves a downtown march and culminates in a candlelight vigil, amplifying voices from the LGBTQ+ community.

Whitmer’s pre-recorded message will commence the rally at 7 p.m. in the University of Michigan Union Ballroom, alongside a line-up of LGBTQ+ advocates and performers. These include Jey’nce Poindexter, the Detroit Women’s Choir, burlesque artist Sophia VonStardust, and Necto drag queen Perry Dox.

Local organizations like Ann Arbor’s SafeHouse Center and Planned Parenthood will also be present from 6:30 p.m., providing resources and support.

Those unable to attend can access the event virtually via a YouTube link, available on the Take Back the Night website at rally time.

Due to the rally’s sensitive nature, organizers will provide counselling and hotline resources. However, parents should consider the event’s appropriateness for their children.

The event is orchestrated by the non-profit Standing Tough Against Rape Society and the University Students Against Rape, a student organization at the University of Michigan.
