The officer in question is under investigation and has returned to work in a “restricted capacity” while the case is ongoing.
Raider, the Dog Mistreated by Animal Control, Safely Returns Home Behind New Fence
The dog who was publicly mishandled by an animal control officer with the Winslow Police Department in Winslow, Arizona, is now safe and secure within a new fence around his home.
The Cherry Bombs, a locally renowned Arizona-based organization known for their extensive help to animals and the community, shared images of Raider, the dog, in his new, protected yard.
Raider was spotted being dragged and injured by an animal control officer from the Winslow Police Department on May 4. Lifelong Winslow resident, Jim Sundwall, reported the gentle canine often follows a local high school teacher home, treats himself at a few households before reaching his family at the end of the block.
Observing a police officer near Raider’s home, Sundwall reassured him about Raider’s non-aggressive behavior and roaming tendencies.
The Cherry Bombs provided an update on June 5, stating Raider now has a fenced yard, courtesy of community donations. Raider has also been vaccinated and tagged. The fence was installed by a local who drove 8 hours, while generous donations poured in from across Arizona, including from a Phoenix-based attorney.
The Winslow Police Department officer involved was under investigation and on paid administrative leave. Winslow Police Chief Franklin Caldwell stated on June 6 that the case was still under investigation and they are reviewing the evidence and speaking with local residents to conduct a thorough enquiry.
In a surprising turn of events on July 10, the Winslow Police Department released a statement on Facebook stating that the Navajo County Attorney’s Office has declined to prosecute the involved officer. The City, however, reassured the public they take animal abuse allegations seriously and are reviewing Department operations and training practices. The officer in question has resumed duty in a restricted capacity pending investigation results.
