Dr. Michael Lovell, President of Marquette University, passed away in Rome last Sunday. Diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer in 2021, Lovell was on a Jesuit formation pilgrimage with his wife and members of the Society of Jesus.

Prior to Marquette, Lovell served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. At Marquette, Lovell contributed significantly to local economy development and neighborhood safety as a co-founder of the nonprofit Near West Side Partners and Scaling Wellness in Milwaukee (SWIM), an organization that addresses generational trauma impacts.

Many expressed their condolences, including Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Fire Chief Aaron Lipski. Governor Tony Evers expressed deep respect for Lovell. The Milwaukee Bucks recognized Lovell’s role in supporting the Fiserv Forum construction, and his dedication to the university and the city.

Chancellor Mark Mone of UW-Milwaukee shared his grief over the loss of Lovell, acknowledging his huge impact on the education sector. Dr. John Y. Walz, President of Milwaukee School of Engineering, praised Lovell’s commitment to academic excellence and community service.

Former women’s basketball coach, Megan, thanked Lovell for everything, describing him as an “incredible man and leader”. Current head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, Doc Rivers, expressed his sadness and gratitude, calling Dr. Lovell a “gentle giant”.
