A local resident, Daniel Barraza, is suing the City of Mesa, alleging he was brutally assaulted by police officers at a teenage girl’s quinceañera celebration.

Broken down in the lawsuit, the incident reportedly occurred on Oct. 2, 2022, at the party when the Mesa Police Department was called due to a guest harassing young attendees. Barraza alleges that he attempted to address the intoxicated individual’s inappropriate behavior before explaining the situation to the officers.

The suit further describes that an officer allegedly assaulted Barraza, pushing him to the ground and striking his face multiple times. Barraza also claims to have been hit twice with a taser during the altercation.

Claiming severe head injuries from the encounter, Barraza is demanding up to $30 million in damages. The lawsuit, which accuses the city and police officials of excessive force, has been transferred to federal court for proceeding.

Mesa police have declined to comment on the ongoing lawsuit. Requests for body-worn camera footage of the incident have been submitted by 12News.
