A PSU spokesperson later mentioned that the situation had calmed down and they were continuing to monitor the ongoing protest.
Portland State University Lifts Shelter-in-Place Alert Amidst Peaceful Protest
The public was asked by Portland State University (PSU) to continue avoiding the area near Hoffman Hall. An estimated crowd of 100 people was observed by a KGW reporter on the scene.
The shelter-in-place alert issued by PSU was lifted shortly after 30 minutes. The university had initially asked that the area near Hoffman Hall be avoided at around 10:12 p.m.
A crowd of about 100, wearing black, was seen gathered north of Peter Stott Field. According to the KGW reporter, the gathering seemed peaceful and featured a megaphone.
PSU later confirmed that the ongoing campus protest was being monitored. The university had issued a brief shelter due to concerns about possible violence. However, the situation has since calmed and monitoring continues.
The university issued a social media post at 9:38 p.m. stating that there was an “incident on campus” and asked people to avoid the area. Updates were to be sent via PSU Alert.
PSU informed KGW that the situation was “rapidly evolving” and that the Campus Public Safety Office, with support from the Portland Police Bureau, was responding in the South Park Blocks area.
