Runner Survives Cardiac Episode Thanks to Quick-Thinking Bystanders at Raleigh Event
Dave Brown, a regular participant in Raleigh’s annual 5K event, ‘Run for Love,’ is fortunate to be alive. The event, hosted by Runologie, takes place in Dorothea Dix Park and benefits Raleigh Pride and The LBGT Center of Raleigh.
“They’re my heroes, my saviors. It’s a lot to take in about, you know? I’m just so, so lucky.”
While Brown has taken part in the race before, his recollection of this year’s run is unclear. “The last thing I remember is turning the corner around the two-mile mark,” he said. Brown collapsed during the race and was discovered to have no pulse and was not breathing.
Quick-witted fellow runners sprung into action and started performing CPR while awaiting first responders. “They’re my heroes, my saviors,” Brown said. “I’m just so, so lucky.”
Brown expressed his gratitude for the runners who intervened and the first responders who used paddles to resuscitate his heart and rush him to the hospital. The incident left him with a cardiac episode and a concussion, and he is still recovering in the hospital. He will eventually require a pacemaker, but he is determined to return to running when he receives clearance from his doctors.
Brown plans to learn CPR and encourages others to do the same. “It saves lives. It saved mine,” he said.
His life-saving runners were found through a Reddit post. He’s organizing a time to meet them and express his gratitude for their prompt action.
